Musée des Troupes de Montagne (Mountain Troops Museum)
Reconstructions of powerful scenes, such as a Great War trench, sets, lights and sounds, uniforms, objects... recreate the experience of those who were nicknamed "The Blue Devils" by their adversaries during the First World War. Part of the historic Bastille site, the Musée des Troupes de montagne is open to a wide public. In a privileged setting, in the heart of the fortress, the museum presents visitors with an area unique in France, combining man and mountain. A visit to the museum is a natural extension of a visit to the Bastille site. Overlooked 200 metres above by the memorial dedicated to mountain soldiers, the museum also serves as a reminder that the history of the Bastille and Grenoble is closely intertwined with that of the mountain troops.

The year 2025 brings to a close the commemorative cycle initiated in France to mark the 80th anniversary of the Liberation. As part of this, the Musée des Troupes de Montagne invites you to discover the temporary exhibition ‘1944 - 1945: the 27th Alpine Division on the road to Victory’.
You will follow the story of a young man from Grenoble, Louis, from 1943 to 1945. He was a student when the capital of the Alps was caught up in the war. In six scenes, he tells the story of his journey from 1943 as a refractory to the Obligatory Labour Service (STO), to 1944 in the Alpine maquis, and finally to 1945 in the uniform of the 27th Alpine Division, during the fighting on the mountain passes.
Louis was to take part in the organisation of resistance movements, and then in their transformation into fully-fledged military units with the support of the Allies. He also witnessed, uniquely in France, the creation of an Alpine division of the Forces françaises de l'intérieur from the maquis, then its rebirth in the French army's order of battle as the 27th Alpine division. Today, the mountain troops are the heirs to this historic unit.
